Ophthalmologist:
Duties and responsibilities:
While ophthalmologists can be thought of generically as 'eye doctors' and perform some of the same duties as optometrists, they differ in that ophthalmologists perform eye surgery and treat eye diseases. Ophthalmologists also examine eyes and prescribe contact lenses and glasses.
Salary:
10th Percentile Physician - Ophthalmology Salary.
Education: Ophthalmologist Degrees and Education Requirements. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat diseases of the eyes. In order to become anophthalmologist, students typically complete a bachelor's program, a 4-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program and a 3-year ophthalmology residency in a hospital.
Demand or need for this profession:
Other possible solutions to a physician shortage include delegating work to non-physicians or boosting the productivity of existing doctors. For patient safety issues, there are many things that ophthalmologists, as eye surgeons, cannot delegate to non-physicians. The challenge that we will face is to see all of these extra patients equally carefully yet more efficiently.
